Osoyoos Fire Rescue (OFR) held an open house on Oct. 12 giving local residents a chance to check out the fire hall, chat with the firefighters and pick up some valuable tips on fire safety. And of course have some burgers and hotdogs cooked by Chief Corey Kortmeyer.
“We had a great time showing community members of all ages our apparatuses, fire extinguisher safety, minor hose handling, and hall tours,” the OFR said.
Some safety takeaways from the night:
1. How to use a Fire Extinguisher (P.A.S.S.)
P – Pull the pin
A – Aim at the base of the fire
S – Squeeze the trigger
S – Sweep the nozzle left to right
2. Having a Fire Escape Plan
Have a primary escape route;
Have a secondary escape route if the primary is not safe;
Ensure there is a pre-planned meeting location safely outside the home;
Practise from different rooms in your home and make sure everyone is able to exit safely.
