Mayor appointed to primary care committee

Town council has appointed Mayor Martin Johansen to represent the community on the Oliver/Osoyoos Primary Care Network Planning Committee.

The South Okanagan Similkameen Division of Family Practice has extended an invitation to mayors from both Oliver and Osoyoos to participate.

The upcoming meeting will focus on resources for mental health and substance use in both communities.

“This is going to be very much a learning experience (for me),” said Johansen, adding that a recent meeting at the Oliver hospital didn’t reveal a lot of information on what the network is. But the new initiative expanding into Oliver and Osoyoos is an evolving target developed by the province, he pointed out.

“Speculation on what I’m hearing, it seems to be just making things a lot more efficient so people can get connected with the people that they need to be connected to instead of going around in a circle.”

This will take some pressure off the primary care system, the mayor stated.
