The Town of Oliver is writing the government to request that Friday bus service be added to the Osoyoos-Penticton run.
At a recent council meeting, the Town discussed joining Osoyoos in trying to get the South Okanagan Transit Service expanded to Fridays. It currently operates Monday to Thursday.
Janette Van Vianen, director of corporate services for Osoyoos, said the province has decided not to provide additional funding toward increased service.
Despite Osoyoos, Oliver and the regional district agreeing to fund the additional service, the answer from the province was still “no,” said Van Vianen. Oliver’s share was slated to be $1,353.
“This decision is quite concerning as we have had numerous requests from the public to increase the service to include Fridays.”
She noted that Friday service will allow people to attend medical appointments, school and other important services that are not available in Oliver or Osoyoos.
Van Vianen pointed out that an increased number of seniors are losing their driver’s licences and requiring transportation.
Councillor Jack Bennest questioned the government’s decision in light of expanding service in Okanagan Falls and conducing surveys to enhance service.
