ORIGINAL STORY:

With water levels of Osoyoos Lake on the rise, the Town of Osoyoos has declared a state of local emergency due to potential flooding.

The Town issued the state on Wednesday, saying that properties and Town infrastructure are at risk and advising residents to prepare for armouring lakeside properties.

“Wind or wave action can increase the need for higher sandbagging or protection. High groundwater saturation levels are also a concern, and some property’s basements may become susceptible to flooding,” a release from the Town read.

The regional district has also declared a state of local emergency for electoral area A, rural Osoyoos, due to high levels of the Similkameen River causing flooding and bank erosion.

If the situation worsens, residents will be placed on evacuation alert, and potentially be issued an evacuation order.

For more information, the regional district’s Emergency Operations Centre can be reached at (250) 490-4225.
