Concluding a weekend of celebrations including prayers and festive food for Vaisakhi, a major Sikh festival which marks the Solar New Year, many members of the local community enjoyed a parade and special procession through the streets of Oliver on Sunday April 17.
The procession is called a called nagar kirtan, wwhere ‘nagar’ means town and ‘kirtan’ means the singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the Sikh holy book.
Traditionally, the procession is led by the saffron-robed Pant Pair (the five beloved of the Guru), who are followed by the Guru Granth Sahib, which is placed on a float.
The Parade began at the Bhavsagar Sikh Temple and went to Oliver Community Park before returning to the temple.
