Osoyoos Secondary School Grade 10 student Kyleigh Turnbull has been selected to study abroad in the Okanagan Rotary Youth Exchange for the 2020/2021 school year. She leaves in August 2020.
Tell me a little about who Kyleigh Turnbull is?
I am a Grade 10 student at OSS. I have lived here since I was one year old. I am active at OSS; I play on the Jr. Girls basketball and soccer teams, as well as being a member of both the leadership class and the interact groups. Outside of school, I play hockey for the Penticton Female Midget Rep Team. I work at Dairy Queen and this past summer at the Osoyoos WIBIT. My favourite subject in school is math. It isn’t one of my strongest subjects but I like the content.
How did you hear about the Rotary exchange program?
In Grade 7 we billeted a Rotary exchange student from Italy. Ever since then I have wanted to take part in the program.
When did you begin your application process and what was the process?
I contacted the local Rotary Club and expressed an interest in the program and asked them to sponsor me in September. After gaining approval from the local Rotary Club in October, I got in contact with the person in charge of the Okanagan Rotary Youth Exchange. They sent me out a package to complete as well as setting an interview date in Kelowna on Nov. 13. I met with three Rotarians, a parent of a past exchange student and a past exchange student. After this interview I received a phone call last week letting me know that I had been accepted for the program.
Where do you hope to travel for this exchange?
My top choices are France and Spain.
Why did you want to go to France or Spain?
I would like to go to France or Spain to become more familiar with the languages. I like both French and Spanish. As well, I think getting to experience the culture and the history of those countries will be a lot of fun and an amazing adventure.
When will you find out where you are going and when will you be leaving?
I will find out at the end of December or beginning of January where I will be going and then I will be departing for the adventure in August of 2020.
