It was only a matter of milliseconds from the word "go" to dozens of children making a beeline onto the field in Saturday morning's Easter egg hunt. And it was only a few more milliseconds until they'd gathered every candy egg from the field. (Richard McGuire photo)

The Easter egg hunt will again be one of the highlights of Easter Eggstravaganza. It gets underway at 10 a.m. in the lower playground at Osoyoos Elementary School and is for children aged 11 and under. If previous years are any indication, every candy and prize is grabbed up by eager children within milliseconds after the start signal. The Easter parade may be gone, but other Easter Eggstravaganza events will be back at the annual festival this Saturday.

“It’s going to be an action-packed morning,” said Nancy Katerenchuk, president of the Osoyoos Festival Society. “We’ll have the Easter Bunny there for photo ops and we’ll have the chicken and live music. It will be a great time for everybody.”

The highlight, as in past years, is the Easter egg hunt for children 11 and under in the lower schoolyard at Osoyoos Elementary School at 10 a.m.

Other events take place in the park next to town hall.

The Rotary Club of Osoyoos serves a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Children’s and family events then continue at the park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. These include a bounce castle, egg guessing contest, face painting and games.

Katerenchuk said the society hopes to have a petting zoo, but arrangements still needed to be confirmed. That event would be new this year.

The judging of decorated bikes and trikes will still take place despite the cancellation of the parade this year.

“We’re still inviting the children to come with their decorated bikes,” said Katerenchuk. “They’ll be judged there at the town centre.”

Osoyoos volunteer firefighters will get their heads shaved and will sell hot dogs to raise money for cancer from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the fire hall.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of the popular annual event.

“Everybody is welcome,” said Katerenchuk. “There’s a lot of families getting together this Easter weekend in Osoyoos. We just want them to come out and enjoy themselves for the morning.”
