Police are warning local businesses to be wary after local wineries were broken into recently.

Oliver RCMP are advising local businesses to be vigilant after a number of wineries were broken into during the past month.

Sgt. Blaine Gervais reported that a break-in occurred at Black Hills winery recently. The suspects entered the business through a door they had broken during a previous break-in.

“In this instance the suspects attempted to open a safe with an axe but were unsuccessful,” Gervais said.

Other wineries have been the target of break-ins, including Tin Horn Creek,  Church and State and three others in the area, Gervais said. “The suspects are targeting till drawers for cash and electronics.”

Police remind local businesses to refrain from keeping cash on site after business hours. They are also advised to maintain a surveillance system and cover or remove expensive electronics. “Especially if your business is located in an area not well travelled, hidden from the road,” Gervais said.
