Dear Editor:

I cannot help but comment on the pending travesty of logic that closing an Osoyoos school would perpetrate on the community.

I have to regard this stated intention of the District 53 Trustees as a disconnection of responsibility for governance.

This is so for the trustees and through them of our elected officials.

There are so many optional responses to this perceived budget shortfall. Further, the closing of a school would cause a long term economic and functional hardship on the whole community of Osoyoos and it’s businesses.

The letter from Wayne Rubner, published in the Osoyoos Times of Jan. 27, provides suggestions for more innovative solutions.

No doubt the amalgamation of the elementary facilities in Oliver would be far less devastating to a community than the currently favoured alternative.

Our provincial government, Ministry of Education and District 53 School Trustees had best get back to the drawing board.

Thank you for the platform to write about one of the most important issues that has come to our town in quite some time.
