
You’re unlikely to see a raft on Osoyoos Lake these days, but it wasn’t so unusual back in 1928 or 1929 when this photo was taken. The woman on the raft is identified as “Spider” Hearle, whose maiden name was Webb. She pushes the raft forward with a long pole. The problem with this method is that it doesn’t work so well when the bottom of the lake drops off beyond the reach of the pole. The raft is built on roughly cut logs.
