Town council has given approval for a FireSmart grant application to benefit the Spartan Street neighbourhood.

On Monday, council voted on a staff recommendation to seek funding to support Spartan Street residents in fireproofing their properties.

The funding will help homeowners take the lead in implementing solutions for wildfire safety, such as removing flammables on their property. For example, a FireSmart initiative in the Morningstar Road area has seen some residents remove cedar hedges, pine needles and other debris near their homes.

In 2015 the Wilson Mountain and Testalinda wildfires threatened some neighbourhoods including Spartan Street.
