In what is likely a first for Osoyoos, the local sailing club is looking to light up the lake with a lit-up boat parade on Dec. 24.
According to Lake Osoyoos Sailing Club director Pierre Forand, it has never been done before in Osoyoos. The idea came to him from similar events in Whistler.
“There has never been an on-the-water, Christmas light boat parade,” Forand said.
So, he decided to start one. While the event is a bit last minute, Forand said he has received overwhelming support.
“Bottom line we thought it would be a couple boats from the club,” Forand said.
Then he got over 140 replies online from people looking to get involved or support the idea.
The outdoor event, weather permitting, will see boats decked out with lights sail from the sailing club toward the bridge near the hotel row, and turn around.
“Everybody is very Gung-ho to do it,” Forand said. “Exactly what form it’s going to take, I don’t know.”
Boats will get ready to start between 4 and 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, with the on-the-water parade likely starting closer to 6 p.m.
Those looking to gather before and after the event can do so with with hot chocolate and warm beverages at the Osoyoos Sailing Club.
Forand has hopes the event can grow out of this first year.
“The longest journey begins with a single step,” Forand said. “And this is that step.”
Motor boats and sailing vessels are welcome and those looking for more information or want to help out can call Forand at 604-935-0963.
