The United Way of Central and South Okanagan/Similkameen (CSO) has officially closed the 2015 fundraising campaign. The final tally was $1,253,257, representing an achievement of 84 per cent of the 2015 goal of $1.5 million.
“Despite the state of the economy, our community continues to support United Way making an extraordinary impact throughout the Okanagan Similkameen”, says Shelley Gilmore, Executive Director. “Our volunteer impact teams will now go to work evaluating agency applications and determining the best, sustainable investments for these funds.”
The United Way would like to extend thanks to everyone who supported the campaign this past year. The top campaign of the year again was Costco Wholesale in Kelowna that helped raise close to $95,000 with every single employee participating in the campaign.
Bank of Montreal, known for strong support of their local community, raised $60,000.
A total of 84 employee workplace campaigns as well as a number of corporate and individual donors, sponsors and volunteers generously giving their time support United Way. This year, United Way CSO plans to invest in programs and initiatives that address the root causes of poverty throughout the region, said Gilmore.
Through collaborations, advocacy and collective action, United Way CSO is working together with agencies, governments, municipalities, associations, businesses and individuals to build stronger, healthier communities, she said.
For over 65 years, the United Way of the Central and South Okanagan/Similkameen has served the region from Lake Country in the north, to Osoyoos and Princeton in the south.
The organization’s mission is to improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action, said Gilmore. A Community Appreciation Celebration (formerly Spirit Awards) is held each year to thank the donors, corporate sponsors and media partners of the Central & South Okanagan/Similkameen campaign. This will include a sneak peek into this year’s planned investments. This year’s South Okanagan Community Appreciation event will take place on Wednesday, May 4 at Painted Rock Winery.
