Osoyoos RCMP are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect captured on video during a break-in at Westminster Rentals recently.

Police said the break-in was reported at 4 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 after an employee received an alarm.

The suspect cut through a fence, removed a lock from the front door and entered.

Three chainsaws were stolen, said RCMP Cpl. Jason Bayda. They are described as Echo models CS500, CS400 and CS310. The total value is about $1,200.

Bayda said there are similarities between this break-in and a number of others that have occurred at Osoyoos businesses in recent weeks.

Driving too fast for winter conditions leads to minor head-on collision

A driver who drove too fast for snowy weather conditions was issued a violation by RCMP following a head-on collision in Osoyoos recently.

The accident was reported to police at 11:40 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4 and occurred on 45th Street in the east of Osoyoos.

Osoyoos RCMP said a 2007 Dodge Caliber collided with a 1991 Plymouth Voyageur.

Police determined that the Caliber was being driven too fast for the snowy road conditions and the driver was unable to negotiate a right curve on the road, striking the front driver’s side of the Voyageur.

The driver of the Caliber received minor leg and arm injuries and was transported by ambulance to hospital for assessment.

The driver of the Voyageur complained of soreness in the arm and neck, but did not seek medical attention at the time.

Both vehicles were damaged enough that they had to be towed from the scene.

Police issued a violation notice to the driver of the Caliber for driving too fast for the road conditions.

Local homeless man found in seasonal residence was seeking shelter

A 44-year-old man found to have broken into a seasonal residence north of Osoyoos on Friday was only looking for shelter.

Osoyoos RCMP said they received a call at 3:32 p.m. on Jan. 9 after a neighbour saw smoke coming from the residence and contacted the owner.

Police showed up and found a male inside who is known to them and lives in Osoyoos, but has no fixed address.

The owner of the residence did not want the man charged, police said.

Small rockslide falls onto Highway 3 on Anarchist Mountain switchbacks

A rock the size of a small car tumbled down in a small rockslide that put debris onto Highway 3 east of Osoyoos on Sunday.

Osoyoos RCMP said they were called to a location past the second switchback on Anarchist Mountain at 3:55 p.m. on Jan. 11.

The large boulder landed beside the road, but smaller rocks landed on the road. The officer and bystanders removed the debris.
