BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) crews and structural firefighters are currently working together to implement small scale planned ignitions along Highway 3A.

Highway 3A was closed earlier today due to the movement of the fire down the slope towards the highway.

The BCWS said crews will use a hand ignition technique and structure protection crews will protect power poles and mitigate impacts to the highway.

The purpose of this is to bring the fire down to a pre-existing control line by removing unburnt fuel between the fire perimeter and Highway 3A and this will also “help minimize spotting potential,” it said.

Highway 3A will be opened as soon as it is appropriate to do so, the BCWS added.
