Osoyoos Secondary School, with the help and cooperation of the Osoyoos Golf Club, hosted the ‘A’ Provincial High School Golf Championships from June 3 to 5.

The event featured schools from all across British Columbia including as far away as Kitimat, Fraser Lake,  Bulkley Valley and Vancouver.

The Osoyoos team was extremely excited to be the host school for this event and worked hard all season to ready themselves for the challenge.

Osoyoos Secondary School (OSS), with the help of  Wayne Hachey and his Desert Golf Academy,  launched a High School Golf academy four years ago.

Students interested in learning how to play golf or advance their game joined the program and receive daily individual instruction. As a result of this and their individual hard work, the growth of all of the players has been amazing.

All of this effort and dedication made it very difficult to pick this year’s team and the competition to make the team was extremely fierce.

After six zone tournaments and a Valley Championship the team was selected: Cole Rezka (Grade 12); Alex Brunner (Grade 10); Tyler Badger (Grade 10); Armaan Deol (Grade 9); Crae Dawson (Grade 9).

Although this year’s team from OSS may have been young, they were full of talent.

During the Provincial Championship there are both  team and an individual competitions. In the team competition each school is required to select their best four out of five team scores for each of the two days.

After day one OSS was in solid second place, 35 strokes ahead of third place but 18 strokes behind Aberdeen Hall from Kelowna.

Great rounds were had by Cole Rezka 75, Alex Brunner 79, Tyler Badger 80 and Crae Dawson 84.

On the final day the team improved their overall score by one stroke but could not gain any ground on the leader and favourite Aberdeen Hall, and despite another great day on the course the team came up just short and had to settle for second place.

Cole Rezka led the way again for the team with a 75, Alex Brunner 79, and Armaan Deol had a great 79 on day two.

On the individual side, Cole Wilson from Aberdeen Hall won the overall low gross event shooting a two under par 70 on both days for a four under 140 total.

Cole Rezka from OSS finished in fourth place overall.

On the female side, Alex Brunner won the overall low gross with a 158 total over the two days.

OSS and all of the teams involved would like to thank the Osoyoos Golf Club for their hospitality and help in hosting this event.

The course was in amazing shape, the staff in the pro shop was extremely helpful, and the food and service from the restaurant was remarkable.
