As the warmer summer months come to an end, and the water demand decreases in the winter, the Town of Osoyoos will continue to maintain chlorine residuals in the water distribution systems, which is primarily used to keep water quality clean and maintain potability.

Though these residuals are present through the summer, the chlorine goes through the system so fast with the high water demand that residents would not detect it, according to Jared Brounstein, director of operations for the Town of Osoyoos.

With the decrease in demand, the Town of Osoyoos’ Operational Services Department is introducing chlorine at our reservoir sites which may result in higher than normal chlorine residuals in the water system for certain users.

“The problem with the winters, of course, is demand goes way down. So in order to maintain the residuals in the system, we have to dose higher,” said Brounstein.

The Town is giving a heads up to residents that the increase in chlorine residuals will be noticeable to some people in terms of smell and taste concerns during the winter months.
