Burn pile season is over and large fires are no longer allowed.
The Open Air Burning Ban is now in effect, including backyard and multiple pile burning for lands within the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) Fire Protection Areas.
The Open Air Burning Ban prohibits fires larger than 0.5 metres in height and width and is in effect until October 15, unless otherwise revised by the RDOS depending on precipitation and dryness conditions contributing to the risk of forest fires.
The bylaw applies to fire protection areas, including Willowbrook and Okanagan Falls, but properties outside fire protection service areas still have an open burning ban in effect.
A news release sent out by the RDOS included a reminder to residents about the risk of wildfires in the area.
“Our region can be subject to a high risk of forest fires, particularly during low levels of precipitation and dry conditions.”
Agriculturists and vineyards removing whole trees or vines can contact the RDOS for assistance with onsite chipping. The RDOS says they will subsidize the work for agricultural materials.
Orchardists and grape growers can contact RDOS Solid Waste at 250-490-4129 for information.
Questions regarding local fire bans can be directed to [email protected] or the Regional District office at 250-492-0237 or toll free 1-877-610-3737. Information is also available at www.rdos.bc.ca.
To find out if a property is included in the ban, the RDOS suggests contacting a local municipality or the Ministry of Forests at 1-888-797-1717.
