Lions ParkWEBThe Oliver RCMP responded to Lions Park early Friday morning for an attempted hanging.

The Chronicle learned that the Oliver Fire Department was also called out to assist the police after midnight.

The report was that someone was hanging from a tree.

Fire department spokesman Rob Graham confirmed this was the nature of the call. But he referred all further questions to the RCMP.

Sergeant Ken Harrington of the Oliver detachment would not answer questions about the incident.

“It’s a Mental Health Act file, therefore medical in nature. We will not be reporting on this.”

A witness in Lions Park told the Chronicle that a 30-year-old transient from the US attempted to hang himself from a tree. The witness, an orchard worker, said the man was depressed about life and wanted to end it. But the orchard worker managed to intervene and save the man. He then called 9-1-1.

Paramedics took the distraught man to the hospital, where he was treated.
