The Town of Osoyoos has now received official blessing from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit to permit “Neighbourhood Zero Emission Vehicles” on the town’s byroads after it amended and approved local bylaws earlier this year.

Based on the Motor Vehicle Regulation BC Reg 25/58, the electric cars also referred to as  “Low Speed Electric-Powered Vehicles” can travel on roads that have posted speed limits of no more than 50 km/h. They are also permitted to cross highways/roads that have a speed limit of no more than 80 km/hr.

As a result, these low-speed vehicles could travel on most roads within the Town’s boundaries, it was observed by town staff in a report to council by Lauren Oshaski, A/Deputy Corporate Officer.

The licensing and registration, and ultimately the compliance of the vehicle and operator, is similar to a vehicle in that registration and insurance must be obtained,” Oshaski added.

Road infractions/violations would be enforced by the RCMP in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Traffic Act and Regulations as well as Bylaw Officers in accordance with Town of Osoyoos Bylaws.

During council’s earlier discussion on the electric vehicles last March, Mayor Sue McKortoff highlighted that golf carts are not included in this bylaw alteration.
