The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS)  declared a state of local emergency on Monday (Nov. 6) for seven days following a rock slide between Hedley-Nickleplate Rd and Ashnola Rd closed a 5.5 km stretch of Hwy. 3  west of Keremeos Sunday night.

An evacuation order was issued Sunday night for two properties in Electoral Area “G” (rural Keremeos).

The two properties – 3455 Highway 3 and 3491 Highway 3 located west of the Village of Keremeos – have been issued an evacuation order out of concern for the safety of the residents.

One of the properties is the River Valley RV Park with approximately 30 residents. RDOS said members of the RCMP and other agencies under the direction of RCMP expedited this action.

The RDOS has set up an emergency operations centre at the baptist church in Princeton, about 50 km northwest, for those affected by the order.

The latest update from DriveBC on Monday at 1 p.m. indicated no estimated time of reopening was available. Drivers are being detoured via Highway 97 to Highway 97C to Highway 5A.

A decision on opening the highway will depend on a geotechnical assessment which was hampered on Monday because low clouds interfered with visibility of the slope.

A power outage impacted nearly 1,500 FortisBC customers when the slide occurred at about 7:40 p.m. on Sunday. As of Monday evening 114 customers were still without power.
