Dear Editor:

Let us have no doubt about voting for proportional representation in British Columbia or anywhere else for that matter.

We have seen and felt the social injustice and disaster of the status quo FPTP for centuries. Many countries, today, around this world are on the razor’s edge of complete ruin. Humanity has suffered for too long from government and economics based on competition, confrontation, deceitfulness and greed of the free enterprise system.

The time, place and opportunity are 100 per cent in favour of a new system energized by cooperation, negotiation and greater representation of the people, by the people and for the people in a humanitarian democratic style of government.

There are over 90 countries on this planet who have used different forms of pro rep voting systems and none of them have returned to FPTP. Please don’t listen to opponents of pro rep who are trying to tell us not to vote if we are confused. Question #1 is 100 per cent comprehensible. We either want pro rep or we don’t. (You could simply vote for that question alone without destroying your ballot.)

The essences of this vote will determine if Question #2 is necessary or not. If we vote for pro rep then the result of Question #2 becomes another matter to be dealt with.

Any one of those three choices can by implemented and given a trial run. Adjustments can be made to any of the three styles of representation to give us a better system of voting and government than what we now have.

I repeat, the present FPTP system is not working and must be changed. Here lies our 180 degree turning point in history. Let’s all work together for a far better world to live in. Especially for our future generations.

James Demetrick Oliver, B.C.
