If you have a large item you were hoping the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) would get rid of this month, hang on to it for a while.

All large item collection events have been cancelled due to concerns relating to the COVID-19 virus.

This includes collections in Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton and Keremeos.

These collections normally allow residents to place unwanted furniture, appliances and mattresses out once a year and the program has been very popular.

As conditions change, local governments will attempt to organize pick-up in the fall. If collection becomes possible later this year, residents will be informed of the new dates.

The cancellation is due to the need to protect workers. Collecting large items requires workers to be in close quarters. Two people are required to lift the items collected, while a third person drives the vehicle. The proximity of workers places them at risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19, according to the RDOS.

Regular collection of curbside garbage, recycling and yard waste will proceed as normal. Only one person operates each truck which allows for safe physical distancing while collecting garbage, recycling and yard waste.

Health officials are asking people to stay home until further notice. They are encouraged to stockpile large items rather than visiting local landfills or recycling facilities at this time.
