Oliver’s Firehall Brewery is celebrating International Women’s Day on Saturday, Mar. 8 with a 3-band concert, prizes, and a special beer. The event is also a fundraiser for the Desert Sun Counselling & Resource Centre, and will also feature prize baskets stocked with goods from women-owned businesses.

The bands – Mother Sun (Kamloops), Jared Jackel’s Bad Vibrations (Penticton), and The Jazz Implication (Salmon Arm) – are sponsored by Respect Record & Skate.

The Firehall women also put their creative thinking caps on and have created a one-night-only cask ale for the event: Voila Viola, a Violet Lavender Lemonade Lager.  The beer pays homage to Canadian civil and women’s rights activist Viola Desmond (found on the violet $10 bill).

This custom recipe combines Kick Axe Lager with fresh lemon zest, lavender-infused Noteworthy Gin, and butterfly pea flowers. This creative concoction will be tapped at 4 p.m.

As for the music, Mother Sun create melodic and adventurous rock’n’roll from the sprawling interior desert of Kamloops. The four-piece have shaped their sound around idiosyncratic songs while burrowing in realms of dreamy psych, trippy folk, motorik power pop and jazz-influenced art rock.

Jared Jackel’s songs and performances meanwhile, are widely enjoyed for their pre-eminent producing and captivating freak-folk live performances have propelled him from playing rural fruit-picker parties to opening for the likes of Destroyer (aka Dan Bejar).

Based in Salmon Arm, “The Jazz Implication” is a fusion ensemble influenced by hip hop, afro beats, modern jazz, and more. A fresh take on jazz fusion, blending diverse influences into a cohesive, high-energy, and engaging sound.

Entry by donation and seating is first-come-first-serve with the main event starting at 7-10 p.m.
