School District No. 53 is hoping to hire two new positions this fall to address mental health and substance use among youth.
In a report to the board, Superintendent of Schools Bev Young said the province is establishing Integrated Child and Youth (ICY) teams, including one in the Okanagan-Similkameen. She noted these teams will coordinate mental health and substance use services and supports for children and youth (up to age 19) and their families.
Young noted this “flexible” service will support public, independent and First Nations operated schools. Even children who do not attend school.
Teams are comprised of clinical counsellors, mental health clinicians, and substance use workers from various organizations and ministries.
Young pointed out that youth with mild, moderate and severe challenges will have timely, equitable, culturally safe and effective interventions.
Heather Rose, district principal of student services, said teams reach people in their own environments – at home, in schools or in the community where youth and families feel most comfortable.
She noted the focus will be on children and youth with mental health and substance use challenges.
Rose said the district is optimistic about the support this team will provide to students and their families.
