The SOSS Hornets were victorious against George Elliot 88-69 on Wednesday with the help of Manjot Dhaliwal, who scored 28 points.
The Hornets grabbed the lead against the Coyotes on a three-pointer from Manjot Dhaliwal in the second period and held on. With a powerful 25-point second quarter on the strength of a 16-3 run, the Hornets pulled ahead and eventually garnered a 46-41 lead by halftime.
Great play from the field made Manjot Dhaliwal stand out, as he made 65 per cent (11-for-17) of shots attempted, as well as 57 per cent (4-for-7) of threes attempted.
Gurshan Dhaliwal (22 points) and Shawn Sandhu (6 points) each contributed multiple three-pointers. Two other players also added 10 or more points for Oliver. Kulbir Grewal had 12 points and Manveer Brar put up 10 points. Also chipping in for the Hornets were Jaime Fortune (4 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block) and Harmeet Brar (4 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal).
The Hornets finished the game with 30 rebounds (14 offensive/16 defensive), two blocks and 21 steals.
The home team is in the South Central Zone finals tonight for the 10th straight year. The game will be played at 7 pm against Summerland, who upset Princess Margaret last night in overtime 77-74.
For the past nine years Maggie and SOSS have battled for zone supremacy, but with the win by Summerland the Hornets will be playing a team that they have defeated three times this year. Two of those games have been close but the last one played at SOSS last week was not close as the Hornets ran away with the game by 50 poits.
The coaches are not letting that win cloud their heads as they know in basketball anything can happen, so they are not taking this game lightly. The winner of this game will have the rights to host the valleys and most likely will be seeded number 1 going into the valleys that will be played at SOSS February 25-27.
Last night the league handed out its all stars: Kulbir Grewal was named league MVP, with Gurshan Dhaliwal and Manjot Dhaliwal being named to the first all-star team, and Manveer Brar being named to the second all-star team. The Hornets improved their overall record to 20-7.
Good luck tonight vs Summerland.
