There won’t be any significant changes to the original design for the proposed new $6 million fire hall for the Town of Osoyoos, said Town of Osoyoos Coun. C. J. Rhodes on Monday.
Rhodes said he attended a lengthy meeting on Jan. 9 along with Mayor Sue McKortoff, fire chief Rick Jones and other senior members of town administration and is pleased to announce construction should begin soon to build the new fire hall.
The fire hall will be built on 74th Avenue near the intersection to Hwy. 97.
“There will be very little when it comes to redesign,” said Rhodes. “We’re really down to the final details of this building.”
Those in attendance were informed that minute details including where electrical outlets will be installed were discussed and approved, he said.
“We’re moving forward,” he said. “It’s getting more and more exciting as the days move on. It’s going to be a very interesting community project for everybody.”
Bursaries to OSS grads increasing
Graduating students at Osoyoos Secondary School will be very pleased to know that Town of Osoyoos council has voted to increase the amount of student bursaries to three lucky students for each of the next three years.
For the past several years, town council has approved giving bursaries in the amount of $750 to three graduating students.
On Monday, council supported a motion to increase the annual bursaries to $1,000 for three graduating students and committed to providing this amount for the next three years.
“One thousand dollars doesn’t go a very long way when it comes to education,” said Coun. C. J. Rhodes. “But it certainly goes to three people who really appreciate it.”
Several students who have received bursaries from the town in past years have written letters thanking councillors and local taxpayers for their support and financial assistance, said Rhodes.
Mayor Sue McKortoff, who was a teacher in Osoyoos for more than 30 years, said the town is being very generous with these bursaries, but she acknowledged they are very much appreciated by those who receive them.
“Students here are very lucky. They do very well,” she said.
The bursaries are given to students who demonstrate financial need or hardship to qualify.
