Education minister marvels at programs being taught at SOSS
By Lyonel Doherty
Provincial Education Minister Rob Fleming spent time at Southern Okanagan Secondary School today seeing firsthand the unique programs being taught there.
Fleming arrived this morning and toured the school with Principal Tracy Harrington, district staff and trustees.
Harrington proudly showed the minister the special education program, which is teaching students how to be entrepreneurs (by selling coffee and treats to teachers). Fleming was impressed by the fundraising the students are doing to help fire-ravaged Australia.
The minister was then introduced to the school’s Indigenous advocates in the “gathering room,” where many activities take place to empower and inspire students.
Fleming also visited the drama department where pupils were busy putting on and taking off costumes. He also had a chat with work experience coordinator Rod Kitt about careers that students are exploring.
