Buying votes is all the Liberal Govenment can do now
The Federal Government is proposing to give money back to the taxpayers. Our question is why are they taking too much in the first place?rnThe Feds have proposed to give back part of the expected federal surplus – actually a third of it in the form of a rebate.
The other two thirds will go to debt reduction and government spending respectively.
Aside from the gong show that has become our federal political scene, this plan is flawed on so many levels.
For starters, this is nothing more than a ploy for Paul Martin and the Liberals to get re-elected. It is an absolute blatent payoff that is intended to sway voters back into their camp.
Hopefully it doesn't work. The Liberals don't deserve to form the next government after the disgraceful way this party has treated the country it was elected to lead.
But that isn't the only problem with this ridiculous plan of giving the money back.
The question that has to be asked is why is government collecting more in taxes than it needs? Not being able to forcast the economy to this massive extent just doesn't wash. Instead, government is playing stupid with its budget numbers and then telling Canadians it didn't expect such a windfall. It then uses money (that it shouldn't have collected in the first place) for extra government spending in order to once again buy votes. It is a vicious circle.
And lastly, how ridiculous is it to give the money back and not put it all against our debt? Things may be booming right now but it won't always be so good, at which point a lower debt would certainly put Canada in a better position to weather the storm.
The problem is that debt reduction does nothing to buy votes and considering the effect that the Gomery scandal has rightly had on this government, then buying votes is it only real chance of getting elected.
Hopefully voters won't be fooled or in this case, bought.
