UBCM cost sharing

Mayor Ron Hovanes introduced a cost-sharing proposal for next year’s Union of BC Municipalities convention in Whistler.

He said Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson is interested in cost sharing the trip if a delegation is going from Oliver.

Hovanes mentioned the possibility of Larson joining them and renting a house during the convention.

Deputy corporate officer Linda Schultz said renting a house would be cheaper than three rooms for five nights at the Westin Resort for $3,260.

Water project awarded

Council awarded Grizzly Excavating a contract to upgrade its reclaimed water system and effluent infiltration basin.

Chief Financial Officer Dave Svetlichny said there were five tenders for the two projects, and Grizzly’s bid of $271,855 was recommended.

However, he noted the budget was $205,000, leaving a shortfall of approximately $72,000. Staff managed to carve off $31,000 worth of parts to reduce the shortfall to about $41,000.

Svetlichny said the Town’s sewer budget reserves looks healthy enough to cover this.

“The $41,000 won’t affect us too much.”

Council approves $3,500 grant

The Town has approved a grant up to $3,500 to the Civilian Sponsoring Committee for 232 Bighorn air cadet squadron.

This funding must be used to cover the cost of connecting their current building to the Town’s sanitary sewer system, which is being extended along Cessna Street.

New theatre impresses mayor

A recent tour of the new community theatre at SOSS has the mayor heaping a lot of praise on the project.

“It will be the premier theatre in the Okanagan; it’s absolutely grand,” said Ron Hovanes.

The mayor noted that not one penny has been wasted on the facility that will feature state-of-the-art technology and sound system.
