Oliver town council has approved the preliminary design for the Station Street Plaza on the former Centennial RV Park property.
In his report to council on Monday, development services director Randy Houle indicated the anticipated start date for construction is August.
In 2020, council adopted a design option for the Town-owned lots north of the Coast Hotel. The proposal includes an outdoor plaza and pavilion to hold community events and programs, with some retail space available.
The plaza’s total cost is estimated at $800,000 to $1 million, but the Town has been successful in receiving a federal grant for $600,000 towards construction.
Houle said the design features a 10,000 square foot plaza with wood benches and Adirondack chairs. The director added there will be a small path connecting to the hike and bike trail. The design option also lists a preserved green area and “destination playground” at the edge of Lion’s Park.
Houle noted that a tree preservation plan is currently underway to determine if the existing trees can be retained. He also stated the grade of the property will need to be raised by two feet due to the high water table.
Houle said the pavilion and possible restaurant addition to the Coast Hotel will occur in future phases.
Houle pointed out the plaza will be a major addition to the area, with an ability for residents and visitors to gather outside for seasonal events, farmers’ markets and even art gallery showings.
