While Sunday night saw rank 4-5 fire behaviour near Mount Baldy, today’s cooler temperatures have calmed the flames a bit, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

Fire information officer Luke Robinson from the Australian team reported the fire is more “subdued” this morning thanks to the cooler weather and calmer winds.

He said Sunday night was a different story when the wind-driven fire jumped the containment guards at the base of Mount Baldy. He noted the fire is currently 2.5 kilometres west of the mountain. He added that no structures are threatened at this time.

Due to last night’s “run,” the fire’s size is more than 17,800 hectares, Robinson pointed out, noting they haven’t been able to get an accurate update on its true size.

The officer said crews are expecting a couple of days of cooler weather and lower winds before they see the warm trend returning later in the week.

More than 200 firefighters are currently actioning the fire.

Robinson reported that the public is cooperating nicely with evacuation orders and restrictions, noting there have been no reports of anyone defying these orders.
