Canada Day celebrations were marred by a shooting on July 1 at the so-called White Sand Beach on Osoyoos Indian Band (OIB) land on the northeastern shore of Osoyoos Lake.

An eye-witness who was at the beach at the time of the incident and prefers to remain anonymous said the trouble began with the arrival of two Jeeps with an unknown number of individuals carrying what appeared to be at least one handgun.

The Times Chronicle has learned from sources with knowledge of the incident that one person was injured with non-life-threatening bullet wounds to his hip area.

The stunning beach is popular with boaters as there is no direct road access other than from within the OIB Reserve. The beach has been a long-running source of frustration with non-indigenous boaters using the beach and frequently leaving behind a mess of garbage on what is private property belonging to the OIB.

The Times Chronicle is awaiting further details from Osoyoos RCMP and will update this story when information becomes available.
