Oliver fire officials suspect that a bird on a wire caused a grass fire north of town Saturday morning.

At 7 a.m. the fire department reported a grass fire near a power pole on Highway 97. The person who called it in said they heard an “explosion” shortly before the fire.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the small blaze, which reportedly caused power disruptions to some residents in the area.

“While on scene it was determined to have been started by a bird that had shorted the power lines,” the fire department said on its Facebook page.

Local fire officials report that these events are not uncommon. “We have had several grass fires, in the recent past, started in this manner,” the department said.
