Pharmasave in Osoyoos is warning customers about a credit card scam making its rounds locally.

This week a customer visited the pharmacy and told staff they had received a call from someone saying they were from their pharmacy. The caller asked for the customer’s credit card information to cover payment for a prescription, Osoyoos Pharmasave co-owner and pharmacist Jolly Gill said.

After providing their credit card information, the customer was contacted by their bank asking if they were making out of province purchases.

“It’s just the typical phone scam,” Gill said. “They start out gentle and then push for more information … they say they’re from your pharmacy, ask if you have a prescription, ask if you can pay, the person gives their credit card information and then they use it to make purchases.”

This is the second report of the scam Gill has heard in Osoyoos this year, and she’s received a memo from Pharmasave’s head office warning of other scams.

The RCMP advises that anyone who is the victim of a scam or fraud reports it to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501.
