The Town of Oliver is continuing to work with the Ministry of Transportation to reduce the number of unauthorized signs on Highway 97.
Last week council agreed to contact ministry operations manager Jeff Wiseman to cut down on the proliferation of signs that are not allowed on the highway right-of-way.
Mayor Ron Hovanes said farm owners are allowed a sign on their property, but “not 28” of them.
In a letter to council, Minister Todd Stone said a number of small businesses use unauthorized signage to attract drive-by traffic.
Stone acknowledged that point-of-sale signs used by farms, orchards and artisans are permitted and are vital to these businesses. But he pointed to signs that are identified as potential safety hazards for drivers.
Stone said the ministry encourages voluntary removal or relocation of these signs to safer locations.
