Condolences are pouring in for the family of a man who died during a structure fire on Island Way Road on Thursday.
Oliver RCMP report that an elderly man passed away in hospital after being taken from the scene on the morning of Dec. 15.
The fire destroyed a residential workshop/garage at approximately 6:45 a.m., leaving one person with serious burn injuries. That person later succumbed to those injuries.
The shop was heavily involved in smoke and flames by the time firefighters arrived, but crews managed to stop the fire from spreading to other nearby vehicles and equipment.
The cause has yet to be determined. Police say they are not investigating any criminal act at this point.

This story reminds of one of our previous residence that had a shop in the back yard. Luckily no close calls but could sure see how easy it is lose track of what possibilities could go bad. I never thought that a smoke alarm or fire extinguisher was necessary even though it had a Jerry can of gasoline and oil.
