Come one, come all. The Canadian Cancer Society is putting out the call for volunteers from all over the South Okanagan, including Osoyoos, to help raise funds and awareness during Daffodil Month.
“We’re calling for volunteers for Daffodil Month to join the fight against cancer,” said Jacqueline Salvino, regional volunteer engagement co-ordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society.
“The reason why we’re calling out now is because we didn’t quite get enough bodies in the interim, so we’re just looking for a little more community support, especially from those who are facing cancer or affected by cancer.”
The society is asking for volunteers from Summerland, Penticton, Oliver and Osoyoos to join the fight this month by donating their time to the daffodil campaign, which is in its third year in this area.
Interested volunteers would be responsible for two things.
First, they would be going door-to-door in the community to collect funds and raise awareness of the society’s presence. Secondly, they would be responsible for promoting the daffodil campaign itself, which Salvino said is very similar to the poppy campaign during Remembrance Day, only with daffodil pins handed out instead of poppies.
Salvino stressed just how important it is for people to volunteer during this month, not just for the society, but for the communities as well. This year they’re hoping to raise $3,000 in Osoyoos alone.
“It’s important in a lot of ways,” said Salvino. “For us, it helps spread the message and again spread that support for those who are affected by cancer.
“A couple hours of volunteering can really make a huge impact, especially, again, with those who are affected by cancer. And for volunteers, it’s a great way to get out into the community.”
Salvino said over the years she has heard tremendous feedback from volunteers, many praising the time they had and the friendships made from the experience.
The daffodil campaign will officially come to a head on April 27, which has been declared Daffodil Day by the society.
The day will feature a number of events across the country.
The response from the Osoyoos commmunity has been strong in the past and organizers expect the same this year.
