Willowbrook cowgirl taking rodeos by reins

A local young woman has qualified to compete in the world’s largest rodeo.

In July, Grade 11 student Vanessa Caverly from Willowbrook will compete in the 71st annual National High School Finals Rodeo in Wyoming.

Vanessa competes in barrel racing, goat tying, breakaway roping and team roping.

She is the current BC High School Rodeo south student president, and is the south season leader in three of her events, and the south “All Around Cowgirl” this year.

Vanessa competed in the BC High School Finals recently in Fort St. John, leading with the most points in the entire province. She will represent Team BC as one of only four contestants in each event.

“I love working on and competing with my horses, and I love making new friends who also love to do what I do,” she said.

This will be Vanessa’s second time competing at the National High School Finals Rodeo; she qualified last year and hopes to qualify again in Grade 12 and continue with rodeo at college upon graduation in 2020.  She currently attends Princess Margaret Secondary School in Penticton.

Along with competing in the finals in Rock Springs, WY, she will also be competing in Merritt, at the Canadian Finals Rodeo from July 26-28.

Her dream is to compete at the Calgary Stampede and the NFR in Las Vegas one day. She hopes to attend school in the USA to continue with college rodeo and study sciences.
