A wildfire on Oliver Mountain three kilometres west of Oliver kept the Oliver Fire Department and BC Wildfire Service busy on Saturday evening.

The fire sparked around 5:30 p.m. and is believed to be started by lightning, despite early reports that it was human-caused.

“It could be that they suspected it to be human and then when they looked around they may have found a lightening tree or a spot where it hit the ground,” fire information office Nicole Bonnett explained.

The Oliver Fire Department requested assistance from BC Wildfire Service, who responded with two crews and an air tanker.

“We called in the bombers to help us because we didn’t want it to go anywhere,” said Oliver Fire Department Captain Andrew Mason.

By 8 p.m. the blaze was contained by a fire guard and crews were mopping up and putting out hot spots.

Crews from the Oliver Fire Department remained on scene overnight.

The blaze peaked in size at 3.5 hectares.
