Two motorists who failed to stop after striking and killing several big horn sheep crossing Highway 3 now face charges.
The incident occurred Oct. 1 when a herd of 12 sheep was crossing a four-lane section of the highway east of Standing Rock near Keremeos.
Westbound vehicles stopped for the sheep, but two eastbound vehicles drove through, striking the sheep and failing to stop.
RCMP South Okanagan Traffic Services said five sheep were killed and two others were injured. Some of the sheep were thrown into the stopped westbound vehicles, causing damage to them.
A Ford F250 pick-up truck was operated by a 56-year-old male and a Dodge Ram pick-up was operated by a 75-year-old male. One resides locally and one is from Vancouver Island.
A joint investigation by South Okanagan Traffic Services and BC Conservation Officer Service resulted in both vehicles being located. One was found at a residence in Keremeos and the other at a repair shop in Keremeos.
Charges were laid for failing to report accidental killing of wildlife on a highway, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and driving without consideration of others.
