Got a leak in your water system? There could be some relief.
The Town of Oliver recently approved the Water Utility Leak Adjustment Policy, with an amendment to remove domestic irrigation systems from receiving relief.
It also included an administration fee of $50 to be deducted from each approved leak relief application.
Under the policy, any leaks involving connections to the Town’s water meter will be granted relief (without the administration fee) if the leak did not arise from damage or tampering by the building owner.
Research by the Town shows three main types of leaks: meter pit, main line, and irrigation line.
Since 2012, the Town has given $32,788 in relief. Fifteen were meter pit and 16 were main line leaks (between the curb stop and the home). A total of eight were irrigation line leaks.
An administration fee of $50 will be applied to all approved leak adjustment greater than $50.
However, if the leak is deemed the responsibility of the Town, this fee will be waived.
Councillor Larry Schwartzenberger said some people may not know they have a leak, so it’s nice that the Town sends out leak notices, like the one he previously received, which he appreciated.
Schwartzenberger said he’s confident the vast majority of Oliver residents will be pleased with the provisions in the policy.
