The Town of Oliver is getting on the bus.

Not literally, but financially.

Council recently approved a budget increase of $2,000 to support an additional Friday trip (from Osoyoos to Penticton) courtesy of BC Transit.

The corporation wants to expand the service level in the South Okanagan and has committed $12.7 million over the next three years to do this.

If approved by all funding partners, this added trip between Osoyoos and Penticton would begin in September 2017, said Oliver’s Chief Financial Officer David Svetlichny. If all goes according to plan, the service will include a Friday morning trip and a mid-day trip.

Svetlichny said Oliver’s share would be $6,187, but because the service won’t start until fall of 2017, the actual budget increase required next year is $2,062, he pointed out.

“Staff views this as a positive service to the residents of Oliver who are unable to commute outside our town boundaries,” Svetlichny said. “It provides them with more freedom at a fairly inexpensive cost.”
