The Anglican Church of St. Edward the Confessor in Oliver is alerting Town officials and neighbouring residents that it will be tolling its bells today (Friday September 9) at 12 noon to mark the death of Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth the Second.
On instruction from the Archbishop of Kootenay, The Most Rev. Dr. Lynne McNaughton, all Anglican churches with bells in the Diocese of Kootenay will be tolling 96 strokes, one for every year of her life, at the same date and time.
This only applies to churches with bell towers and as such, St. Christopher’s Anglican Church in Osoyoos will not be tolling the bells.
St. Edward’s peal of eight bells were cast in bronze and were shipped from London, according to the church’s publicity person, Penelope Johnson. She also highlighted that the bells are not automated, but rather they are tolled by hand.
Unlike in Britain where bells will be specially muffled by leather coverings on the bells, St. Edward does not have the equipment or manpower to do the same.
