Crannas Jewellers was the victim of an attempted break-in this morning (January 20).

A would-be thief attempted to break into Crannas Jewellers in Oliver this morning (January 20) but was scared off by the alarm.

Owner Frank Barnay said someone physically removed the locking mechanism in the front door at approximately 6:20 am when the alarm sounded. A metal bar on the inside of the door also foiled the culprit.

A disgruntled Barnay noted that police informed him about other break-ins in Oliver recently, including Tim Hortons.

“I went to Woody’s Glass, and the stories he’s telling (about the rash of break-ins),” Barnay said.

The proprietor, who’s been in business for 43 years, said it’s stressful working as a jeweler because you don’t know who’s going to enter your shop with a gun.

Barnay couldn’t explain why people do these things, adding that some don’t want to work. But if people find life difficult, there are places to turn to, such as food banks, he said.

As far as police services go, the business owner commented that much of the crimes that occur in Oliver are “hush, hush” and never reported to the media.

“We have a right to know so people know what’s going on . . . so we can be on guard.”
