The Osoyoos Indian Band’s purchase of 3.8 hectares of land in the Lower Arrow Lakes region is cause for celebration, according to Syilx Okanagan Nation.
Today, several leaders, Elders and traditional knowledge keepers came together (outside Castlegar) in celebration.
Clarence Louie, ONA tribal chair and chief of the OIB, said the land acquisition is not just for OIB members, but for all Syilx Okanagan people to enjoy.
“This land provides a place for every Syilx person to be able to get out on the land and water, to be able to fish, hunt, and gather,” Louie said.
“The access to this land represents another step on the path to our
Nation continuing to reconnect to salt’ik’wt and all parts of the eastern territories,” he added.
