Osoyoos Elementary School students took their Remembrance Day history lesson to the streets this morning on a monument scavenger hunt of sorts.
Teachers Helen Wollf and Lisa Livera said that because of the pandemic the school hasn’t been able to do the normal mass assemblies it normally would.

“We did our formal assembly by Zoom this morning, but in order to really have the kids learn and be interactive with their learning for Remembrance Day, we decided to take them out and have them learn about the memorials and the place and what’s given up and sacrificed for them,” Wollf says.
The first stop was town hall where the students had to find answers to fill in the blanks on their quiz sheets. After that they were off to the Legion and then Veterans Park before heading back to the indoor classroom.

“It’s a bit of sort of scavenger hunt looking for information on the plaques,” says Livera. “All the information is local to here and they have to find and learn about the place they live,” Wollf added.
“I noticed this morning from my kids there was a lot of connections – the grandparents, their uncle, so they do have a lot of connections more than I thought they would,” Livera says.
“They were respectful this morning, they understand what we are doing,” she adds.
Wolff also noted that one of her students has visited Ottawa before and seen the memorials. “I had about 2/3 of the class put up their hands when I asked do you know anybody in your family that has served. So lots of them can say they know someone who served or that they are connected to and we’ve also discussed our own connections it too.”
