SOSS BBALL-1The Hornets nest was a buzz with fans from both Maggie and SOSS Thursday evening, as the teams battled for a spot in the Valley championships.

The Hornets won the game 67-52.

Head Coach Mo Basso posted the following report on the Hornets facebook site…

This game did not disappoint the home town crowd who cheered their Hornets on for 40 minutes of exciting basketball.
This was the fourth meeting between the teams with the Hornets winning the last two meetings by 14 points each time. The game started out slowly for SOSS as they fell behind 11-5 but they ended out the quarter on a 7-3 run and trailed 14-12.

The second quarter was much better for the Hornets as they upped the defence and fed off of the Hornet faithful, out scoring Maggie 14-5 in the quarter, and allowing them to take a seven point half time lead 26-19.

The third quarter was all Hornets as they switched up defence, confusing the Mustangs and forcing them to make key turnovers. That all led the Hornets to three-point bomb after three-point bomb – from Kulbir Grewal, Blake Miller Yuckin, Brett Harrington and then Austin Basso, who hit two huge three’s to end the quarter as the team out scored Maggie, pushing the lead to 16 49-23.

The fourth was no different as the Hornets pushed the lead to 27 at one point with four minutes left.
The team could have cruised to victory but made things interesting as they committed five-straight turnovers, allowing Maggie to crawl with-in 15.
But that was as close as it got as the Hornets won 67-52.

Austin Basso led all scorers with 20, Blake Miller Yuckin had 14 and Kulbir Grewal addd 11. Brett Harrington had a solid performance coming off the bench as did Manveer Brar and Anmol Malhi before fouling out.

The Hornets have now accomplished two of their four goals, winning the league and then the zones. We are now gearing up for our third goal.
What made the win bitter sweet is that the team was able to do it with out their standout point guard, Gurshan Dhaliwal who left game with a sprained ankle.
Luckily the team has the two weeks before the Valleys.

A big shout out to the great SOSS fans and bringing back the “warm up the bus” chants. The team salutes you.
Also I would to thank the seniors, Austin, Blake, Anmol, Karn, Brett, Raj, Jasdeep and Sukh.

Lets go boys lets get the job done. Go Hornets, go Hornets supporters.
