Lauren Meads, executive manager of the South Okanagan Rehabilitation Centre for Owls (SORCO), was guest speaker at the Osoyoos Desert Society’s first presentation in its winter program on the subject of snowy owls. She brought a stuffed young snowy owl to her talk in which she detailed SORCO’s work to rehabilitate several sick and injured snowy owls last year. The owls breed in the Arctic, but last year a swelling in their population called an “irruption” caused many younger ones to come down through B.C. On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Desert Society’s next presentation will discuss the environmental effects of plastic bags and other plastic merchandise. (Richard McGuire photo)
