The federal government is lifting the COVID-19 PCR test requirement for fully vaccinated land travellers returning to Canada after short visits to the US. The official lifting of the requirement is expected later this week.

This means travellers making short cross-border trips, returning within 72 hours of their departure from Canada, will no longer need the PCR test. These tests cost anywhere between $150 and $300 and have been viewed as prohibitively costly.

B.C. premier John Horgan said today that he learned of the decision at yesterday’s First Ministers’ meeting.

“Important decisions were made by the federal government with respect to our border crossings with the US and we’re very happy to hear that the PCR testing rules that were in place for short visits will no longer apply for those who want to travel to the US for a day or two,” Horgan said.

Horgan said he raised the issue with the feds “some weeks ago and I’m grateful the federal government has responded.”
